The facts tell a clear story, domestic abuse is all too common in the U.K and its harmful impacts on survivors can extend to many areas of their lives
A common myth is that it’s only domestic abuse if it involves physical or sexual violence. In fact, many women experience domestic abuse without ever being physically harmed. Non-physical forms of abuse can be as destructive and as undermining as physical violence. And it can happen to anyone, regardless of age, background, gender identity, sex, religion, sexual orientation or ethnicity. That said, statistics show most domestic abuse is carried out by men and experienced by women. Across England and Wales, 1 in 4 women will experience abuse in their lifetime and on average, one woman is killed by an abusive partner or ex every five days.
Who are Refuge and what do they do?
Refuge is the largest domestic abuse organisation in the U.K. and on any given day they support thousands of survivors, helping them to overcome the physical, emotional, financial and logistical impacts of abuse in order to rebuild their lives. They opened their first safe house in 1971 and have been campaigning against domestic abuse ever since.
The Christmas Appeal
Hearts of Queens is very proud to have selected Refuge as its Charity of the Year for the third year running, and the beneficiary of all proceeds of our Christmas Appeal. Running every year throughout November and December, our raffle are sold to raise enough funds to pay for at least five shelters over the Christmas period. It costs £500 per day to run just one shelter. And there just aren’t enough to go around.
We continue to be grateful for all of the fantastic prizes donated each year, both by our supportive poker operators and non-poker donors. Here are just some of our fantastic sponsors:
